detroit.dance live – vol. 015 : Grant Jackson + Interview

20.01.2021

This week’s guest mix is by Grant Jackson, the man behind the successful Taco Tuesdays, Soup Sessions, and After Hours Brunch at the Magic Stick Alley Deck. He has also gone by alias K@dog for bass style music.

He has been DJing and curating events for over 10 years, all around the city of Detroit while spinning various genres of electronic music. This mix is a special treat – as he has not recorded a mix for release in about five years – and he chose to bless everyone with a full hour of liquid DnB.

This interview was short and sweet. In it, we cover things like why he chose liquid DnB for his mix, something important he has learned while curating events, going a little more in depth about his events at the Magic Stick, some goals, and more.

This is also the first week of our new partnership with Deep Space Radio! From now on, each mix will exclusively premiere on Deep Space Radio at noon on Wednesday – and then be available on the detroit.dance SoundCloud as per usual at 3:13pm EST.

Be sure to check out his mix, on SoundCloud now.

detroit.dance: What do you do outside of music?

Grant: I’m pretty much just with my son all the time, my family, the roller rink.

detroit.dance: What are your hobbies?

Grant: The music, that’s really it. I didn’t snowboard this year, but I do like to snowboard too.

detroit.dance: Is there a reason that you chose DnB for your mix?

Grant: I don’t get enough chances to play it and it’s one of my favorites. It’s more fun for me to mix. There’s not that many moments at the weekly at the Stick that call for it, so it was an excuse to do something different for me. That and bass music is moreso where my roots are.

detroit.dance: In your 10+ years of playing at and curating shows, what is one of the most important things that you have learned?

Grant: I think that when hosting or curating events, being a DJ and a promoter, you have to take yourself out of it and make it about everyone else. On my weekly, it’s about showcasing all of the other artists. I’ll DJ once in a while if there’s room in between people or if somebody doesn’t want to, but I think that’s definitely the most important thing that I’ve learned. Coming from Dubstep Circus and stuff like that, moving on to doing something every single week, I realized more and more that to be selfless is the best way to do it.

detroit.dance: What is one of your favorite memories so far?

Grant: When we brought Egyptian Lover to Roller Disco, that was definitely one of my favorite events.

detroit.dance: You’ve been hosting Taco Tuesdays and Soup Sessions at The Magic Stick for 3 years and After Hours Brunch there for 2 years now, did you anticipate that they would be as successful as they have been?

Grant: Yeah, actually. I totally expected it because there wasn’t anything happening on a Tuesday or Sunday at that time. I felt like that’s what I was looking for. Something different all the time.

detroit.dance: Do you have a favorite soup or taco that has been on the menu?

Grant: I like the steak tacos and the chicken curry a lot.

detroit.dance: What are your personal or music goals for 2021?

Grant: I’m hoping that we will be able to host events again, and I’d like to produce something. It’s been a really long time since I have, but I’d like to do that this year.

Make sure you check out Grant’s Destination Detroit (Majestic Theatre Complex), and his Recipe by Request that will be posted on Friday (Saag Paneer).
