detroit.dance: What does Movement mean to you?
Andrea: Movement is a celebration of Detroit’s underground music community, in which a lot of us have truly found a home. It’s about bringing people together from all over the world, to join us in reveling in Detroit’s music, art, and dance culture. This is the time of year that we, as a city, have the opportunity to showcase the depth of talent and culture that we are striving to keep alive in Detroit.
detroit.dance: What are you most looking forward to this year?
Andrea: I am just beyond geeked for the overall return of Movement weekend. The lineup is properly well-rounded, in my opinion, so there’s a little bit of something for everybody. There’s just nothing quite like that feeling of walking into Day 1 with wide eyes and hungry ears — and leaving days later feeling exhausted, content, and wishing it wasn’t already over!
detroit.dance: What are some of your most memorable festival moments?
Andrea: Personally, my most memorable moment to date is my first opportunity to play a Movement stage. My festival debut was in 2019, which was the last Movement we’ve had. Needless to say, I’m absolutely thrilled to be once again representing our Detroit locals for 2022.
detroit.dance: How are you preparing for your set this year?
Andrea: This year, I’m taking some leaps and playing around with some styles and sounds that are not in my typical wheelhouse. Definitely not going to play it safe. My goal is to hook you in and keep you hooked, and really showcase my evolution as an artist over the last ten years.
detroit.dance: What have you learned from your last time playing the festival?
Andrea: What I’ve learned from playing the festival is that as an artist, you truly have to be confident in yourself. Don’t try to be something that you’re not! Expressing yourself to a massive crowd can be daunting, but you have to remind yourself that at the end of the day, everyone is just there to boogie.
detroit.dance: You’re playing the Official Movement Pre-Party on May 7th at TV with Kenny Larkin and Mister Joshooa – what’s the vibe you’re going for for your set there?
Andrea: First of all — so stoked on this one! I’d like to think that I’m pretty well-versed in warming up the room for high-energy artists, but I always get wicked nerves before any gig. Kenny is a legendary native Detroiter, and Mister Joshooa has been like a mentor to me over the years. For this set, I’m gearing up to keep a true, Detroit underground vibe to pay homage to the city that birthed me as an artist.
detroit.dance: Any tips for Movement first-timers?
Andrea: Plenty of rest throughout the weekend — you don’t want to burn yourself out on the first day. Be sure to check the forecast and come prepared for any type of weather. Drink lots of water, all day, every day! WEAR EAR PLUGS, protect those bad boys! And for the first-first-timers, it doesn’t hurt to coordinate a meet-up location amongst your buds.
